LEARNING TO DRIVE: THE REALITY.

By | 09/09/2025

You know, if I had a pound for every time I have heard someone mention, “My friend passed their driving test after 20 hours!” or “My dad passed his driving test after 10 hours!”, I would be typing this while enjoying the sun on my yacht, anchored off the coast of the Bahamas!

… If only, eh?!

Although such assertions may occasionally hold merit, they are not universally applicable. In reality, each person is unique and, consequently, learns at their own rate.

In a classroom setting with thirty students, the teacher will deliver the lesson, and it is likely that at the conclusion of the lesson, the students will demonstrate varying levels of comprehension and grasp of the material.

Do we judge those pupils who take a little longer or need a little more help in grasping the concept or topic they are learning? Of course not.

In a running race featuring athletes of diverse skill levels, the elite competitors will undoubtedly complete the course more swiftly than recreational or local club runners. Nevertheless, all participants will cover the identical distance, although some may require a slightly longer time to do so.

So when you learn to drive, the formula is the same. You are unique. You will learn at your own pace. In reality, the instructor can only facilitate learning at a pace that suits you. Learning can’t be forced.

As human beings, we often find ourselves inclined to be competitive. However, when embarking on the journey of learning to drive, it is advisable to refrain from comparing yourself to others or engaging in competition. This is not a race, and it is crucial to thoroughly grasp the fundamental principles of driving, as they serve as the bedrock for a lifetime of safe driving practices.

Despite our efforts, there’s not an instructor in the land who can speed up an individual’s natural pace of learning; however, what I do have is you at the centre of my driving world.

Take your time. Relax. Enjoy the learning experience.

Get it right. For life.

Chris.
