Who knows!

Being a learner driver at one time myself, I can fully understand the eagerness to attain a driving licence and get out on the open road. What concerns me nowadays is that a growing number of people think that it is feasible to take, for example, 10 hours of tuition from an instructor and at the end of which be fully capable of passing the driving test, whilst also being confident and equipped sufficiently for a safe life on the road. Whilst it may be possible for a learner driver with a reasonable amount of previous experience to do so, for an absolute beginner, in my opinion it is simply not possible as to begin with, it is vastly insufficient time to even cover the driving syllabus. This is without spending the time to master the skill and experience a variety of ‘real’ driving situations.

Further to this, I personally don’t agree with the notion of learning to drive in a week. Before I am chastised by some of my fellow instructors, I’m not saying that doing so isn’t possible (in SOME cases it is, and I’m sure many instructors are successful with it), however, for the masses, I feel it sends out the wrong message. For me learning to drive should not be something that should be ‘time limited’ and outwardly appear so easily achievable. Whilst I do not intend to get too in-depth with my core reasoning for this, any one of my former students will agree with me in that, ultimately, their learning and understanding of the skill of driving was enhanced by not having the ‘pressure’ of constantly making great strides in their learning whilst having ‘driving judgement day’ looming on the horizon.

I fully believe that the core learning predominantly takes place in-car, whilst the understanding and ‘penny-dropping’ takes place in the time away from the car. I have experienced numerous instances (far too many to mention) whereby a student has been struggling with a particular skill, or struggling to fully understand something particular at the conclusion of a learning period, only to have a ‘eureka moment’ during their own time and to return the very next lesson to perform brilliantly with it.

To Be Continued. . .

http://www.chrischambers-som.com

https://www.facebook.com/drivingschoolssunderland/posts/615028695204499

A survey recently conducted by Co-operative Insurance found that driving lessons are failing to prepare them for life on the road.
