Reflection…
Question: What has happened to my beloved football club?!
Well, as the man himself Mr Poyet rightly stated in his post-match interview, Sunderland now pretty much need a minor miracle to avoid the dreaded drop.
After playing what can, at best, be described as “all right” for an hour, my beloved Sunderland found themselves on the wrong end of a 5-1 humiliation; In the end, we basically surrendered.
What we witnessed wasn’t even Championship standard football in my humble opinion… This fact hurts.
I’ve seen more skill and passion watching a pub team on a Sunday morning if I am honest.
Whilst I can accept defeat, it is the manner of our latest horror-show leaves me cold…
The moment Spurs took the lead, the effort, intensity and will-to-win simply drained away from the Sunderland players. Seeing the players standing defeated, dejected, with hands on hips looking for answers spoke volumes.
Defeated. Crushed. Without hope.
After the third goal went in, the reality of our plight REALLY hit me personally. I have been Mr Positive since day one with regards to our survival hopes; however now even I am bordering on losing that last shred of survival hope.
I love my club with all my heart, but, you know what, sometimes I wish I just didn’t…
Whilst it is still mathematically possible to avoid the drop, even the most optimistic of supporters (Me!) have to accept that, apart from the shouting, we’re going down and there’s very little we can realistically do about it.
We Sunderland supporters have witnessed more than our fair share of relegations over the years, but I did honestly think that the days of being referred to as a ‘yo-yo’ club were long gone.
It seems I was way off the mark with that one…
So, given the position we find ourselves in, why don’t we make the most of our Premier League status while we still have it, and try to go out on the pitch and enjoy it?! Pressure off but never give in, and enjoy the football; You never know, we might just pick up a few points along the way.
Of course, we don’t want to drop down to the Championship, but having thought about it, could relegation, in some strange type of way, be a blessing in disguise?!
Oh, and for the record, I genuinely believe that Gus is the right man for the job.
Time will tell I suppose…
My Man Of The Match: Each and every member of the Sunderland faithful who made the major trip to the capital on a cold, rainy Monday night, only to be served up with that rubbish. I salute each and every one. We Sunderland supporters deserve far, far better.
If I must suggest an on field MOTM, then I would give it to Lee Cattermole; the best of a really bad bunch.
Next up – Everton at the SOL.
Keep The Faith.
