Sunderland AFC v Aston Villa – Barclays Premier League.

Match date: Wednesday 1 January 2014.

Final Score: Sunderland 0 – 1 Aston Villa

Reflection…

Simply put: Frustrating.

Sunderland were once again the masters their own downfall – How many times have we witnessed that over the season..?!

In what was touted by most as another ‘must win’ fixture pre-match, we failed to deliver what Gus Poyet and the Sunderland faithful desperately craved.

The dreaded individual error raised its ugly head yet again. A major lack of concentration by Lee Cattermole gifted Villa with an undeserved winner. The game was just another example of our obvious failings sadly. We played quite well overall and seemed more than comfortable in possession in my opinion, with my current favourite player, Ki, pulling the strings once again.

The statistics show that we had the lions share of possession, however as is obvious to anyone with eyes, we are desperately toothless – and I do mean DESPERATELY – in the final third of the pitch.

Check out some of the match facts good people:

• We bossed the game really with a handsome 65% of the possession.
• We managed to notch up not-too-shabby 17 attempts on goal.

However – drum roll please…. A measly one shot on target.

Enough said really… We need to adopt a shoot on sight policy with immediate effect.

Naturally, when teams are in our position in the league it’s easy to blame bad luck or misfortune for their failings – and boy have we had our fair share thus far this season – however today I think we would have some sort of justification for ruing our luck when we are denied, what for me, were two pretty much nailed-on penalties.

Then, of course, there was the Giaccherini goal which was disallowed for off-side. For me, he was in line but unfortunately my opinion means nothing… apparently!?

😉

So, as it stands we are still rooted at the foot of the table, however we must ensure that we get things on track and do so quickly. A couple of new faces around the club to shake things up a little may be just the tonic we need.

Our fate is still very much in our own hands – maybe we, and I am as guilty as the rest of you in this, should stop trying to predict the results and worrying about the results of those around us.

Just a thought.

We move on…

In Gus We Trust.
