In an attempt to increase high-street trade, proposals are in place to allow drivers to legally park on double yellow lines for up to 15 minutes.
The hopes are that by allowing drivers to “pop-in” to local shops without the prospect of being hit with a hefty fine, it will drive trade to local shops which are currently thought to be suffering from flagging trade due to the lack of parking facilities available in the immediate vicinity of the high-street.
Personally I can see a couple of problems should this proposal be implemented.
First of all, parts of the Highway Code will require a re-write as it goes against the rules concerning double yellow lines, as ultimately they are there for a reason!
Furthermore, people park illegally on double yellow lines as it is so nothing much will change: if anything, people will likely park on them for longer. In addition to the longer parking periods, the increased number of people parking will cause other problems by increasing the potential danger to pedestrians.
A recipe for disaster maybe . . .
I could sit here and reel off a number of other reasons why it is unlikely to work (which I won’t!), however what it all boils down to is: how would it be policed?
We currently have numerous road rules and regulations which are, of course, in place for the right reasons, but which are being flaunted on a daily basis because of the lack of available policing; speeding, seat-belts etc.
Will legislation be passed to change the rules concerning double yellow lines? Who knows . . .
Only time will tell . . .
