This development in technology could have come straight from the pages of a James Bond movie script!
Land Rover’s latest concept car can be driven ‘at very low speed’ using a smart phone, tablet or the car’s removable console, while not actually seated inside it.
This particular development is really just a gimmick in my eyes, as there is no realistic practical use for it, and certainly with regards to its use on the UK’s roads as current UK law forbids drivers from leaving the vehicle while the engine is running. Even current self-parking technology requires the driver to operate the both the gears and the accelerator in order to move the car backwards and forwards: only steering control is automated.
I have said it before, and I will say it again – while I am all for developments being made in vehicle technology when done so in the interests of safety, I am also very sceptical about much of it. Simply put, I am not a huge believer in technology which takes away much of the ‘human element’.
In my opinion, the responsibility ultimately needs to stay firmly with the driver.
