Shocking new statistics have shown that women now make up 17 per-cent of drink-driving convictions in the UK, which worryingly is double the figure of that of only 15 years ago.
Even in the modern day, the subject of drink-driving is still very much a taboo subject with many people, and while I certainly don’t intend to sound patronising – and I certainly wouldn’t preach to anyone – many drivers still take the subject too lightly, in the belief that they “can handle their drink”, or it’ll be fine as they are “only going down the road”.
There is also a worryingly false belief that drivers know their own bodies and limits where alcohol consumption is concerned, with many drivers believing that they will be fit to drive the morning after.
In reality, there are a number of varying and determining factors involved, such as:
• Age, weight, sex and metabolism (the rate in which your body uses energy).
• What you have eaten recently.
• The type of, and amount of alcohol consumed.
• Stress levels involved at the time.
Should one be caught in control of a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol, both the potential, and real consequences will likely have a long-term negative effect on a drivers’ life.
I have stumbled across an interesting and informative piece in ‘The Telegraph’ recently, which highlights the experiences of one female drink-driver who was arrested 10 years ago, and reveals the unexpected consequences that still plague her life today.
