Shock figures recently released have lifted the lid on the regions worst cases of speeding drivers, with figures showing that some of the regions motorists reached almost 100mph in some 30mph areas.
The figures, released by the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM), highlighted a number of alarming figures, including one driver caught doing an astonishing 96mph in a 30mph zone beside Leam Lane in Gateshead.
And it doesn’t end there…
One of the more alarming statistics showed a driver caught travelling at 94mph on Ryhope Road in Sunderland. This speed is horrifying enough given that the road has a designated 30mph speed limit, however to intensify matters more, and as many of my Sunderland based readers will likely know, the speed camera is located pretty much outside of Southmoor Academy.
Simply unacceptable.
Sadly, speed cameras are often considered simply as ‘cash cows’ for councils and Government, however they do – for the most part anyway – serve their purpose of slowing people down, while in turn punishing those blatantly flaunting the law. Furthermore, it’s worth remembering that when a vehicle is travelling at an excessive speed in a restricted zone, the risk to lives in immense.
While I personally feel that speed cameras on the whole are a good thing, I do believe that they are not without their issues. For example, I regularly travel past the speed camera located in Sunderland as highlighted above, and I often find myself being passed by other motorists of whom appears to be travelling at excessive speed on the approach to said camera site, only to then look on as they brake excessively as they are about to pass the camera.
This in itself could prove to be a major risk, as a vehicle could quite easily lose traction with the road when switching from acceleration to heavy braking.
I suppose the debate of this particular topic will rage on amongst motorists…
