Driving Schools Sunderland: Road Safety Charity Urges Zero Tolerance To Drink-Driving

By | 10/06/2014

Road safety charity, Brake, has called for drivers to pledge not to drink any alcohol before driving this coming summer.

The call comes as police are set to launch their new 2014 drink-driving campaign which, back in 2013, produced figures showing that a huge 100,892 drivers were breathalysed, of which 5,170 actually failed the test.

This year in particular holds an increased cause for concern for police, as it is thought that the upcoming World Cup of Football may serve as a catalyst for drivers to be tempted into having an alcoholic drink during the matches before taking the wheel.

The anti drink-drive campaign will consist of an increased number of alcohol and drug checks at the roadside, along with providing drivers with information concerning the dangers of drinking and driving.

On a personal note, I am absolutely 100% zero tolerance to drink-driving, and feel that zero tolerance should be made law; essentially, you either drink OR drive.

The current legal limits of alcohol (35 micrograms per 100 millilitres of breath, 80 milligrams per 100 millilitres of blood, 107 milligrams per 100 millilitres of urine) in my opinion only serve as a convenient ‘allowance’ for many drivers.  The problem being that everyone is affected by alcohol in different ways and on different days depending upon a number of different and varying factors.

For example, person A has X amount of alcohol on a given day and could be comfortably within the legal limit, however the very same person could, on a different day, drink the same amount of alcohol and be way over the legal limit.

To simply say, “I’m allowed a couple – I’ll be fine…” is, for me, a desperately worrying and inaccurate means of determining fitness to drive.

Just my own personal thoughts and feelings on the subject…
