Driving Schools Sunderland: Call For ‘Mandatory’ Eyesight Test

By | 01/09/2014

Road safety charity ‘Brake’ is calling for the introduction of a mandatory eyesight test for all drivers on the renewal of their driving licence every 10 years.

The call comes after a survey found that a quarter of drivers in the UK admit to not having their eyesight tested for more than two years. Interestingly, the call for eyesight tests to be made compulsory by the Government has been backed by 9 out of ten motorists (87%) polled.

As things are, the only legal eyesight requirement is for a driver to comply with is to be able to read a vehicle number plate from a distance of 20 metres, despite scientific research showing that a person can lose 40% of their vision before noticing as much.
