The Government have stated that they are considering a revision of the current driving test, with the emphasis on reflecting more real-life driving.
The proposed shake-up could very well mean the end of the ‘turn in the road’ manoeuvre (commonly known and referred to as ‘three-point turn’), with more realistic ‘everyday’ manoeuvres such as reversing out of a parking bay being favoured. Learners could be asked to use satellite navigation systems, and possibly even be asked one of the vehicle safety questions while on the move.
The proposal is still very much in its infancy, however as part of a preliminary trial, around 1,000 learner drivers across the UK will be asked to take part in the new practical exam measures.
The driving test, in its current form, has been around for two decades (with the independent drive phase being introduced in recent years), however any changes to the current format will need to be subject to a full public consultation… so don’t expect any radical changes soon.
