According to a study carried out by the American Automobile Association Foundation (AAA), hands-free, voice activated controls systems installed into many modern vehicles and can allow a driver to control various functions within the car (such as changing the radio station), are every bit as dangerously distracting as using a hand-held mobile device behind the wheel.
Six built-in systems, designed in part to keep the drivers’ vision on the road ahead, were put on test whereby the driver’s mental capacity, reaction time, and heart-rate were measured. The research found that while not all systems tested were the same – some systems were found to be significantly more distracting that others, the majority of them were thought to cause as much distraction as a demanding mental mathematical problem.
