Reflection…
I write this whilst still basking in the warm after-glow of what can only be described as an amazing and truly heartening day both for the club, and all concerned with the greatest club in the land!
We went into the game in desperate need of all three points in order to keep the spirits up, and of course keep us in-touch with the sides around us…
And boy, did we deliver when needed!
The team which Gus selected was probably, on current form at least, the strongest available to him, however when I saw the team sheet I must admit that if I had been choosing the starting line-up, I would have started with AJ on the bench to be utilised as an impact sub like he did against Manchester United during the week….
Erm… How wrong was I..!?
🙂
I would say that aside from the initial 9 or 10 minutes immediately following half-time when we were caught on our heels a little really, Sunderland controlled the game admirably for the entire match. I could sense an urgency in our play but not in a negative way – more of a controlled, positive urgency. Playing the ball out from the back, driving forward in possession. Pure heart and commitment on show…
Brilliant. Beautiful to see – so much so that it almost brought a tear to my eye..!
So ultimately, what will today’s impressive win do for us? I suppose the naysayers amongst the Sunderland “support” will say that it’s all too little – too late for survival purposes and that we are already doomed.
I’d say, get behind your club until the very last ball has been kicked – you never know, you might just be surprised…
Me? I have said it before, and I will happily say it again… We are far from the worst side in the Premier League and today’s performance, I feel, justifies that statement.
We’ve had a brilliant week really – what with victories in both the FA Cup and the Capital One Cup, and of course today’s barn-storming victory away from home in the league.
The future could very well be bright…
In other Sunderland related news, we have become only the 10th team in England to score more than 7,000 league goal!
Nice!
My Man Of The Match: Well, it has to be the hat-trick hero Adam Johnson! It would be unfair and unjust on the lad if I said someone else really. With his three goals and brilliant overall performance, AJ just about shades it!?
😉
Next up it’s Southampton at the SOL… Bring it on!
