As the headline suggests, there are a number of hurdles to be overcome before self-parking cars become a common sight on Britain’s roads.
As I mentioned in a recent blog post concerning the development of such technology, current UK law forbids drivers from leaving the vehicle while the engine is running. Current self-parking technology requires the driver to operate the both the gears and the accelerator in order to move the car backwards and forwards: only steering control is automatic.
The newly developed technology, it seems, sees the driver get out of the vehicle and uses a mobile phone app to perform parking manoeuvre remotely.
