Reflection…
First off, Sunderland are no longer in the bottom three!
What a day, and what a fantastic result for the Sunderland faithful.
One word about today’s performance: Clinical.
On the back of two great performances the previous week against two of the top sides in the league, today’s game against our relegation threatened counterparts could well have been the proverbial banana skin.
Both clubs went into the game with the ‘must win’ tag hanging over them; both sides knowing that a win would see them out of the bottom three.
With almost 46,000 passionate supporters crammed into the SOL, we started the game very brightly and I just knew within moments of the kick-off that today was destined to be our day. Granted, over the 90+ minutes, Cardiff weren’t the best and Vito barely got his gloves grubby, but you can only beat what is put in front of you!
Given the confidence and body language of the players over the last three or four games, along with the results of course, Sunderland have given themselves a very genuine chance of Premier League survival: The great escape is very much ON!
With two goals from Connor Wickham, a goal by way of a penalty from the coolest man in the stadium Fabio Borini, along with a beautifully taken effort from Emanuele Giaccherini, we produced our biggest home win of the season.
Seven points from a possible nine – and had lady luck been in attendance against City, we would have at gained all nine – is a phenomenal return from a club basically written off by all and sundry only a little over a week ago.
We long suffering Sunderland supporters have certainly had worse weeks that’s for sure…

Regardless of the emotion and excitement surrounding our recent form and results, the task of retaining our Premier League status is not yet complete. We must remain focussed on the task in hand and go again next weekend in another winnable game.

My Man Of The Match: A great performance all round, but for me it has to go to our new goal scoring hero – and Sunderland legend in the making – Mr Connor Wickham.
