Reflection…
What a great cup side my beloved Sunderland are proving to be this season!
Through to the quarter-finals of the FA Cup, and having already secured our place in the final of the Capital One Cup, dare the Sunderland faithful dream of a domestic cup double?!
And why not!?
Gus Poyet has done an absolutely fantastic job for this great club, and deserves every plaudit he receives. The confidence and style of play he has brought to Sunderland is admirable, so much so that we could well be in the process of one of our most successful seasons in living memory.
Anyway, as expected Gus made a number of changes (Nine in fact!) to the side which played against Hull City in the league last weekend (let’s not say any more about that particular game, eh?!), which included handing a debut to January signing, Ignacio Scocco.
The match itself was nothing to get overly excited about in terms of edge-of-the-seat moments, however Sunderland controlled the game quite comfortably in my opinion against a surprisingly ineffective Southampton side. For me, we were never really in real danger of losing the game, and I did honestly expect a lot more from Southampton.
The game was won by a single goal courtesy of a thunder-bolt strike from Craig Gardner – a goal worthy of winning any game…
Job done!
From here on in, my concern (if I have one!) would be that we have a lot of games to play in a relatively short space of time, and what with today’s victory, it only adds to the fixture congestion… however, I don’t want to sound like I’m complaining!?

My Man Of The Match: Some very decent performances, however for me the returning Lee Cattermole just gets the nod.
Next up – Arsenal away at the Emirates…
