That’s right – it appears that the Government’s drive to boost sales of “ultra low-emission” vehicles is faltering, despite grants of up to £5,000 being made available to people for buying them.
The scheme, which was introduced by former Transport Secretary, Philip Hammond, in 2011 had set aside a £400 million subsidy kitty, however the forecast appears to show that it is likely to hand out only £230 million by the time the offer expires in 2015, which of course leaves a huge £170 million in unclaimed subsidies.
My personal thoughts on why the scheme has not been received quite as well as expected, is that regardless of the available grant, the purchase cost of an electric vehicle is still way in excess of that of a conventional Petrol or Diesel powered car, along with the logistical implications of owning one.
For example, the current public charging infrastructure is far from as wide-spread as required, and the effective charge times involved are way too excessive for most people given the modern pace of the lives we lead.
