German car maker Audi are developing a system which will ‘communicate’ with traffic lights.
The system, which uses an internet connection built into the vehicle to ‘talk’ to a city’s traffic management hub, is being designed to help drivers save fuel by alerting them when traffic lights change so they can slow down.
The system also primes a car’s engine stop-start system – a modern vehicle feature which is now becoming more common-place – when a change from red to green is imminent.
Audi’s calculations predict the potential to reduce CO2 emissions by up to 15 per cent. Furthermore, it is calculated that should the technology be rolled out across Germany, approximately 900 million litres of fuel could be saved.
