Being a driving instructor I’m constantly working with people of differing abilities, experiences and overall levels of confidence.
Some people naturally seem take everything in their stride, others may need a little more work.
Regardless of which category someone happens to fall into, each and every one of my students that sees it through to the end and passes their driving test, leaves me happy in the knowledge that they possess the skills and ability to remain a safe & confident driver for life.
One of the main approaches I use in my teaching is “goal setting”: essentially encouraging the learner driver to set their own goals and targets they wish to achieve by the conclusion of the lesson. This is latterly followed by allowing the student time at the end of their lesson to reflect upon, and to assess, their own performance / understanding of the subject matter, or attained skill level in relation to the goals that they set themselves at the beginning.
Whilst browsing the web I stumbled upon the image below and I honestly think that it is brilliant: very pertinent to what I do for a living!
It is hugely rewarding to see a student begin at, for example, the “I can’t do it . . ” level, then with carefully structured teaching / coaching on my part, along with a lot of self-evaluation on the part of the student, they then find themselves with a totally different and positive mind-set to go forward with.
Even if the student should happen to fall just short of their target that particular day, they will certainly leave at the “I can do it!” or “I will do it!” level, whilst now being armed with the knowledge and motivation to come back more confident the following lesson: not just achieve said goal, but to actually surpass it!
Happy days!
🙂
Stay safe folks!
Chris
