Concern Raised For Over-65’s At Speedy Pedestrian Crossings.

By | 19/11/2013

Road safety charity, Living Streets, has warned that millions of elderly people are at risk every day when crossing the road because traffic lights don’t take into account of their generally slower walking speeds.

The charity is calling for the Government to increase the “green man” phase time at pedestrian crossings by three seconds in order to ensure that older people are not stranded in the middle of the road when the lights change.

University College London (UCL) has carried out research which found that most people over the age of 65 walk far slower than the estimate of 1.2 metres per second which forms the basis for crossings current “green man” phase time.
