Driving Instructors Sunderland: Highway Code Stopping Distances Questioned

By | 14/08/2014

The RAC’s Report on Motoring 2014 has found that many drivers underestimate the official stopping distances as outlined factually in the Highway Code.

The actual accuracy of the facts and figures stated in the HWC have also come into question, with a separate survey finding that the vast majority of the 1,000 Approved Driving Instructors (ADI’s) surveyed believing that the official braking distances have become irrelevant and should be updated.

This particular argument is a valid one in my opinion also, as the figures set out in the HWC were determined back in the 1960’s, when vehicles were very basic in comparison to those produced in the modern day. Nowadays, vehicles are equipped with superior tyres, braking and suspension systems, and also advanced active braking safety systems.
