Motoring groups have claimed that new potential speeding fines – which can be up to a staggering £10,000 – will likely have a ‘chilling’ effect on motorists by leaving them too scared to appeal. The worry is that should they choose to fight the decision, then they could find themselves in the magistrates’ court.
The Governments’ plans to potentially quadruple the fines handed out by magistrates for driving too fast, were branded ‘disproportionate and draconian’ by motoring groups.
As things currently stand, speeding on a dual carriageway or using a mobile phone at the wheel carry a maximum fine of £1,000, with the offence of exceeding the 70mph limit on a motorway standing at £2,500.
