The EU plans to make it compulsory for every new car to be fitted with a ‘black box’ in order to track its movements by 1 October 2015.
Such a device has received criticism for being yet another example of ‘Big Brother’ watching, however others claim that such devices could actually help save lives by automatically contacting the emergency services and informing them of your location in the event of a road traffic crash.
In addition to the benefits mentioned above, the technology could also be used by the police as evidence for prosecuting drivers for speeding and other driving offences.
The technology involved is not exactly new, however any time the word ‘compulsory’ is used, the news will surely receive a hostile reception in certain circles.
