A survey by car insurers More Than has found that one in three drivers is so clueless when it comes to road signs, that they cannot even recognise the symbol for a sign such as the national speed limit.
Worryingly of the 2,000 drivers quizzed, almost a fifth said they did not know that when driving in a built-up area the speed limit is 30mph unless signs say otherwise. In addition to this, more than a third (36 per cent) of those quizzed said they regularly disregard the 30mph limits by travelling at an average speed of 38mph.
Worrying findings indeed…
Given the career I have chosen, along with the amount of time I spend on the road, I do feel that there’s a worrying number of drivers nowadays for whom it seems that speeding is an acceptable everyday behaviour. I also feel that this perceived ‘acceptable behaviour’ applies to many drivers where use of a mobile phone is concerned.
But that’s a whole other post! (Don’t get me started on that!?)
On a lighter note, it seems that one in seven of those quizzed mistakenly thought that the warning sign for ‘slippery road’ meant that the road had been freshly painted?!
I have to admit that I found that one finding quite amusing!
