Driving Lessons Sunderland: Black Box Device Foils £54k Insurance Fraud

By | 30/04/2014

A crash involving a car and a lorry has been found to be bogus thanks to the Black box technology, which in turn foiled a fraudulent £54,000 insurance claim.

Personal injury claims made by three passengers in a lorry were found implausible, when the telematics device fitted to the car also involved in the low speed shunt was examined.

The personal injury claims were found implausible due to the size and weight of the vehicles and the speed which the car was travelling at the time.

Fraudulent claims cost the motor industry over £1 billion each year, with claims for injuries such as whiplash soaring over the last decade.

Telematics are becoming an increasingly common option or requirement for drivers insuring a vehicle.  The “black box” monitors driver behaviour such as speed, acceleration, braking and cornering, and these factors in turn cut car insurance cover premiums accordingly.
