Driving Lessons Sunderland: Number Of Learners Crashing Mid-Test Dropping

By | 29/04/2014

According to research carried out by IntelligentCarLeasing.com, the number of ‘crashes’ taking place during the driving test are predicted to fall.

It seems that last year there were 22% fewer such incidents took place than in 2009.

The article states that there have been only 20 crashes during driving tests so far this year, therefore should this frequency continue, there will theoretically have been just 80 collisions by the close of 2014; this would work out to a positive 87% fall against 2009 figures.

There are two general theories given as to why the figures are set to fall according to the leasing firm:

• The general standard of drivers has improved.

• And to quote, “Driving Instructors have become more proactive and quicker to take the controls in a dangerous situation”.

Now then, while the news that such incidents are falling is positive, I do feel that there has been a lack of research or misinformation taking place.  My reason being that we instructors are in no position to “be proactive and quick to take control in a dangerous situation” during the driving test as we don’t personally conduct the driving tests – this is the role of the examiner.

When taking responsibility in the role of instructor/teacher/coach during a driving lesson, naturally I would take control of any developing or potential situation before a ‘crash’ could occur, however during a test of driving ability I would have absolutely ZERO control.  There are two general reasons I can give for this:

• While the test is taking place, I am invariably back at the driving test centre awaiting the return of the examiner and my student.

• Alternatively, I am sat in the back of my own car in the role of an accompanying observer only, whilst the examiner is sat in the passenger seat.

Either the article has mistakenly stated the title ‘instructor’ in place of ‘examiner’, or as mentioned above, a lack of research or misinformation has taken place.

Never mind, just saying…
