Liverpool could be set to become the first city in the country to remove bus lanes, following a year long trial without them in operation.
The move has been welcome one by motoring organisations who have applauded the ‘bold’ decision to scrap most of its bus routes, and they hope that other city’s will follow suit by only operating them where absolutely necessary.
The introduction of bus lanes boomed during the last Labour government as part of their ‘integrated transport policy’, with the most infamous bus lane being situated on the M4 into London as a means of speeding then Prime Minister Tony Blair out of the gridlock from Heathrow Airport into the capital.
Dubbed ‘the Blair lane’, security reasons were cited for the VIP exemption, however it was scrapped by the coalition government when the came into power in 2010.
