Match date: Wednesday 26 March 2014.
Final Score: Liverpool 2 – 1 Sunderland
Reflection…
A very much improved display against a Liverpool side unbeaten in six and flying high at the top-end of the league.
Having said that, given the pathetic performances we have been served up against Palace and Norwich of late, an improvement in performance wouldn’t have taken too much really!?
Given our conflicting fortunes at opposite ends of the table, the majority of people – both pundits and the public – had this one pencilled in as a cricket score against us… that just didn’t happen.
As proud as I am of the display on the whole, it really does frustrate me that had it not been for yet ANOTHER silly, unnecessary individual error (step forward Mr S Vergini…), the result could very well have been different…
In all honesty, Vergini was extremely fortunate to stay on the pitch for the full 90+ minutes; he always looked off the pace and sloppy which unfortunately showed in his ‘attempt’ to tackle Suarez which in turn led to Gerrard’s goal. We needed to change something, but when it came I wasn’t quite sure what Poyet’s thinking was with regards to the substitutions, however the introduction of AJ and Ki did, to be fair, made a huge difference to the game.
The most pleasing thing to come from the game was that the passion and desire was back, and ultimately we had Liverpool hanging on to their slim lead as the game drew to a close: They certainly didn’t have it all their own way, and knew they had been in a game by full-time.
Play like this from here forward, and we will surely cement our precious Premier League status for next season, however the threat of relegation is very REAL…
To sum up my feelings almost 24 hours removed, the word that springs to mind would be ‘heartened’.
We must now turn our attentions to the West Ham game next Monday evening. I know I have said the same thing about every game of late, however this game, being at home and all, it an absolute MUST WIN.
Home fixtures are the key: Win those and we’ll be good…
My Man Of The Match: Ki Sung-Yueng by a country mile.
Next up – West Ham at the SOL.
Keep the faith good people… You never do know!?
