Surrey Police were alerted via CCTV to the cyclist riding along the hard shoulder between junctions 11 and 12, for Chertsey and the M3.
This in itself is perilous enough (as well as being illegal), but to heighten the risk even more was the fact that it took place at rush-hour.
According to waiting officers, the man was following the directions on a mobile phone app as he was looking for a quicker route to work. When stopped, the police said that the man was unaware of the rules of the road concerning cyclists and motorways, and even struggled to see why it was dangerous to ride or walk on a hard shoulder.
Following a long conversation with officers, the cyclist was safely removed from the road, and in turn was fined £50.
For me, it does beg the question how the cyclists’ own gut instinct didn’t say to him, “Something not quite right here…”.
