The autonomous vehicle takes 2.5 million measurements every second by using four infra-red light sensors which are mounted to a roof rack.
These sensors constantly scan the road ahead, as they search for objects including other vehicles, pedestrians, small animals and cyclists. The taken measurements are then turned into a real-time 3D map which is fed into the car’s on-board computers.
Ford are not the first company however to produce a ‘driver-less’ car. Google have been testing a vehicle on Californian roads since September 2012, and has clocked up more than 300,000 miles without a major incident.
I have said it before, and I will say it again – whilst I am all for developments being made in vehicle technology in the interests of safety, I am also generally skeptical about much of it. Simply put, I am not a huge believer in technology which takes away much of the ‘human element’.
Too many people will become reliant on it, and of course, technology can and will go wrong, which could be a recipe for danger.
