Figures obtained by tyre safety organisation ‘TyreSafe’ show that many motorists are failing to ensure that their tyres are in a safe condition and legal for the road, by instead relying instead on issues being picked-up during the vehicles’ MoT test.
The figures, which were obtained under a Freedom of Information (FOI) request, showed that more than a staggering 2.2 million cars failed their MoT test because of unsafe or illegal tyres in 2013.
In light of the findings, and what with the tail end of a hurricane set to strike the UK next week, drivers are being urged to check their tyres are fit for purpose. Regardless of the size of the tyre fitted to a given vehicle, it is worth remembering that only a very small portion of that tyre is actually in contact with the road at any one time, and said portion of rubber is constantly subject to a variety of acceleration, braking, and steering forces.
Should the tyre have insufficient tread depth, weaknesses within the tyres’ construction (such as obvious ware, bulges or dents, cuts etc.), or incorrect recommended air pressure, the potential of being involved in an incident or accident is greatly increased due to the extended stopping distances, vastly reduced grip, and the potential for aquaplaning being major concerns.
Should you have any doubt as to the condition / legality of your tyres, my advice would be to visit your local tyre specialist who will happily carry out a free tyre inspection, then advise you in regards to your options. Furthermore, I would also advise that when it comes to purchasing new tyres, to purchase the very best you can afford – tyre quality, much like when seeking quality driver training I may add, is one area where cost should absolutely not ultimately influence your buying decision.
