Recently I reported on plans by the UK Highways Agency to introduce a 60mph zone on the M1 in order to help reduced emissions.
The reason for this is that it thought a reduction of just 10mph will help significantly in improving air quality.
In France, the measures to improve air quality went gone one step further… well, briefly anyway!
In one quick swoop, half of all private cars and motor-bikes, and almost all trucks, were banned from the roads of Paris and its inner suburbs.
On Monday, only vehicles whose registration numbers ended in an odd-number were allowed in the city, with the intention that Tuesday would see the turn of ‘evens’.
However, the Government decided that the scheme was so successful, that it could be abandoned after only one day!
Unfortunately for 4,000 motorists, they had been given instant 22 euro fine for driving illegal, even-numbered cars on the day.
