Ministers in Scotland are hoping to pass a bill, which could be as early as next August, to reduce the drink-drive limit.
Should the new legislation come into force, the limit is set to be reduced from the current UK limit of 80 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood, to 50 milligrams.
The potential new lower limit would put pressure on UK ministers to make moves to do the same, as Scotland would then be on par with other EU countries.
Meanwhile, drivers crossing into Scotland from England could be at risk of falling foul to the new drink driving laws given the difference in the drink driving limits between the two countries.
