Ministers issued guidance to councils last year to consider the introduction of 20mph limits next to schools and roads heavily used by pedestrians and cyclists.
Many councils have began to implement the such limits; You may have noticed an increasing number of 20mph limit signs appearing in your area – I know I have.
However there is an increasing concern among motoring groups about the widespread implementation of the speed restriction on entire road networks, which are often in town or city centres.
The concerns are raised as it is thought that such restrictions in such areas will encourage drivers to take routes off the main roads, hence the ‘rat run’, which in turn will make our residential streets even busier than the already are.
There is also an argument that by implementing a lower speed limit on the wider road network will unnecessarily slow the progress of traffic flowing through busy areas.
