According to the research, pregnancy is linked with a significant risk of a serious car crash which requires emergency medical care during the second trimester.
More than half a million pregnant women were studied to look at whether common features of pregnancy such as fatigue, insomnia, nausea etc. could contribute to general human error in increasing the risk behind the wheel.
The research found that:
• The women had 177 crashes per month during the three years before pregnancy.
• The women had 252 crashes per month during the second trimester.
This equated to a 42 per cent increase in the number of serious traffic accidents during the middle of pregnancy.
