Vehicle history experts HPI says that according to latest figures, there has been a three per cent increase of vehicle mileage discrepancies from last year.
This means that of the 6.8 million used cars sold last year, 7.15 per cent of them, or 486,000 cars, could have had their mileage adjusted in some way.
The act of ‘clocking’ has been a favoured choice of villains for many years as selling a car with low mileage on the clock, albeit not genuinely low mileage, has been seen as a way of adding value to a car. Surprisingly, the act itself still isn’t actually illegal; however what is against the law is selling a car that has been clocked without declaring it.
Part of the problem for buyers in the market looking to purchase a used car, is that there are precious few physical signs that a car has been clocked, so essentially unless you have been told, you will likely never know.
Given that the vast majority of modern vehicles nowadays have an on-board diagnostics port, you simply get someone who can plug in their computer which is installed with the relevant software, meaning that the act is relatively straight forward to carry out, where as on older vehicles fitted with a mechanical odometer, the act required the removal of the instrument binnacle.
