There is a “growing risk” from female drink-drivers who believe that they are still fit to get behind the wheel, despite being over the legal alcohol limit the AA has warned.
Worryingly, the figures concerning drink-driving women has almost doubled in the past 15 years, with experts blaming the drinking habits of middle class mothers who either drink socially on a lunchtime before going on the school run, or those of whom drink alcohol as part of their evening meal before getting behind the wheel next day.
Findings by car insurance company Direct Line show that back in 1998, women accounted for only nine per cent of all drink-drive convictions, however this figure rose to 17 per cent by 2012. Furthermore, it seems that one of the most common reasons given for driving following an intake of alcohol is because they felt physically “okay” to drive.
